There's just so much to love about alpacas. These quirky, funny, fuzzy animals are full of personality, and they're sweet, quiet, and curious. On top of that, their fleece is incredibly soft, which is why alpaca farms have popped up all over the U.S. since they were introduced here in the early 1980s. There's a farm in Maine where you can meet alpacas up close, and you're going to want to visit.
Welcome to Northern Solstice Alpaca Farm in Unity, Maine! This beautiful farm began allowing guests to tour back in 2006, and you're going to want to see what all the fuss is about.
Address: 141 Crosby Brook Road, Unity, ME, 04988
Alpacas are some of the sweetest, most gentle farm animals ever. They're herd animals who are very social, both with each other and with humans.
Alpacas are bred for their soft, warm fleece which is spun into yarn and used to create hats, scarves, and more. They grow up to weigh between 100 and 200 pounds, and mostly enjoy diets of hay.
Baby alpacas are called crias, and they're too sweet for words. These fuzzy little bundles of joy weigh around 18 pounds when they're born, and usually start to stand and walk when they're just an hour old.
Visit the farm to say hello! While these quirky creatures don't necessarily enjoy being petted, they love attention and will come right up to you.
Northern Solstice Alpaca Farm loves to educate the public about alpacas, and it offers free tours. Bring a picnic lunch and your camera, and meet the alpacas up close.
You'll want to pay a visit to the farm's store while you're there. It offers all kinds of soft alpaca yarn, as well as socks, sweaters, hats, shawls, toys, and more. An item made from silky soft alpaca yarn makes the perfect gift.
