We all know that getting outside in Maine is one of the best ways to remember why we love it here. Whether you're taking a major hike through the woods, sitting at the beach enjoying the breeze, or just walking your dog through your neighborhood there are few things more relaxing than Maine outdoors. When we think of these trips outside it's usually under bright skies. But, this hike offers something totally new and different. Stay up past your bedtime and experience Maine under the night sky.
Because the coast of Maine has such a small amount of light pollution, it's one of the best places to see the southern night sky.
And, lucky for us, this part of the sky is where the Milky Way can be seen.
For one of the best ways to see it, head to Curtis Farm Preserve, a 1.25-mile trail system featuring coastal bays, scenic views, fields, and forests.
Explore the 15 acres of forested freshwater wetlands that run up the ridge from the shores of Curtis Cove. Follow the path to the rocky coast. It an easy and direct hike that's doable by all skill levels!
Make sure to make your way to Stover's Point Preserve where you’ll have views of Orr’s Island, as well as the surrounding sound. This 180-degree view of the southern sky is one of the best you'll find in Maine.
We love heading here with friends and blankets when the weather is a bit chilly. And if you do the short hike in the spring or fall you're almost guaranteed to have the place to yourself.
Curtis Farm Preserve is maintained by the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust.
If you prefer your hikes under the summer sun, you'll want to check out this route to a refreshing swimming hole. It's easy and offers lots to see. And for more views of Maine under the gorgeous night sky, check out this article.
