Hike to Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse for one of the most breathtaking views along the Maine coast. Some of the most recognizable features of Maine are the lighthouses that dot the coast. From the ones that sit out on cliffs to the ones found offshore on islands, there are so many to see and appreciate. There are 65 lighthouses, and each one offers a different history and reason for being. While the Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth might be known as the most photographed, we think the Rockland Breakwater in Maine is one of the most recognizable. If you love the romanticized idea behind these beacons then you should make sure you visit this one; it is one of the most famous lighthouses in Maine. The best way to see it is this trail we highly recommend.
The Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse dates back to 1902 and is one of the most quintessential scenes in midcoast Maine.
Sitting at the end of the breakwater, the lighthouse station includes a keeper's house and a fog signal building. It was built to replace the former light at Jameson Point which featured an oil lamp that was placed in 1827.
While photos of it are lovely, there's nothing like seeing it in person, which can be done by heading to Marie H. Reed Breakwater Park.
The 1.9-mile trail begins here and offers flat terrain leading towards the breakwater. We love getting a chance to walk the coastline of the Pine Tree State on a beautiful, warm day and this is one of the best lighthouse hikes in Maine.
After hugging the coast, the route gets interesting as soon as you reach the breakwater.
Stretching almost a mile into the harbor, the rocky route has some of the best water views.
But be sure to take extra caution on a blustery day as it's not uncommon to see waves landing across the rocks. Of course, this is part of what makes it so beautiful.
At the end of the route is the keeper's house, which is fun to explore.
Be sure to take in the history of the spot before making your way back to the start to enjoy more of what Rockland has to offer.
The Rockland Breakwater Trail is accessible year-round, though it's best to check weather conditions before you head out. In the rain and snow, conditions can become slippery quickly. You can learn more about the trail, see more photos, and check out a map by visiting the hike to Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse on AllTrails.
For the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse directions, you will want to head north on Main St. in Rockland, which is also Route 1. Take a right on Waldo Ave (this is also where you can find Waldo in Maine...), and then turn right on Samoset Rd. This trip will take you less than 10 minutes right from the heart of downtown.
While you're in town, consider spending some time checking out the local shops and eateries. We recommend this unsuspecting Maine diner. They have some of the best food in the north.
