The outdoor activity options in Maine are plentiful. From cross-country skiing to challenge terrain hikes, the trails available here are perfect for people of all ability levels and all interests. One of our favorite ways to enjoy the outdoors in Maine is through the unique Maine Huts & Trails system.
Maine Huts & Trails is a non-profit organization located in Kingfield.
The trail’s primary area runs along the Carrabassett, Kennebec and Dead Rivers. It was created with the aim of promoting "people powered" activities for the public to take part in during any part of the year.
These "huts" are actually four off-the-grid eco lodges located along 80-miles of the trail system. Ultimately, there will be a total of 12 year-round huts built along the trail, each located a a day’s trip apart from another.
After arriving, visitors are treated to huge great room with a cozy reading area, and a screened-in porch for the summer.
They all have hot showers, toilets, heated bunkrooms and rooms for drying your gear. The four huts all have names: The Stratton Brook Hut, The Flagstaff Hut, The Grand Falls Hut and The Poplar Hut.

But these huts aren't just a place to sleep. You'll enjoy an incredible meal as well.
Meals are served at three times a day and are created using locally sourced and organic ingredients whenever possible. Dinner, breakfast and a bagged trail lunch are included with overnight stays. Day guest can purchase lunch during the full-service season on weekends and during school vacation weeks.
This is one of the absolute best adventure options in Maine!

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. If you love the maritime history of Maine, you'll love Bath. You'll find fun coffee shops to relax in and plenty of local shops and restaurants. When you're done there, head to the Kennebec River area to read some of the historical markers explaining why this town is also referred to as the "City of Ships." And don't forget to check out the arts schedule at the Chocolate Church for some fun and unique entertainment!
One of the most tourist-visited towns on this list, there's a lot to love about little Ogunquit. Of course, on a busy summer day, you'll find the downtown area packed but that doesn't mean you should avoid it. There are some great local shops, restaurants and bars. Plus it's super photogenic. Plan on a fall or winter visit to avoid the crowds. But no matter the time of year, Ogunquit is one of the best small-town getaways in Maine.
The main street through downtown Gardiner is Water Street and on it you'll find plenty to enjoy. From restaurants to shops, this town on the Kennebec River is a wonderful day trip in one of the most charming towns in Maine.
South Berwick has experienced its own renaissance and we're here for it. Visit to tell your friends you went someplace they may not have considered, but also to check out the local community feel of the downtown area. You'll also find plenty of new spots that make things here feel like a destination and not just a throwback.
A fantastic combination of off-the-beaten-path and super-cool, the town of Norway is blink-and-you'll-miss-it small but so worth the trip. You'll find everything from a local brewery to a BBQ joint to a vegan restaurant, all on the main street. Stick around for a night or two and enjoy some of the outdoor options nearby, too.
If you're really an ambitious explorer of Maine you'll want to head to Houston. A visit to this town will take you to The County, an often overlooked spot for those who live further south. But the architecture is historic and you can't leave without enjoying the local snack shops. Plan for some time driving around the area to see some truly beautiful parts of the state.
Route One goes straight through Thomaston and it also doubles as their main street through downtown. There are lots of historic buildings and the midcoast beauty you'll find is unparalleled. Be sure to check out McLoons Lobster Shack just outside of downtown for some great seafood. Thomaston is one of the best coastal towns in Maine.
