Maine is the perfect place to enjoy the great outdoors! This is especially true when the weather begins to warm and all we can think about is enjoying some time surrounded by nature followed by a dip in the water. If you agree, we've got the perfect day trip for you. Make your way to Oxford County where you'll find a short, simple hike to a waterfall that flows into the perfect swimming hole.
Maine has plenty of waterfalls to enjoy and each one comes with its own unique characteristics. Many are large and impressive, but we love that even the smaller ones are worth visiting.
One of our favorites to visit year-round is The Cataracts, located near Newry in Oxford County.
The trail to reach it is just 0.9 miles making it a hike that won’t take up the entire day.
You’ll find the trailhead in Mahoosuc Public Reserved Land near the small bridge where East B Hill Road runs across Frye Brook. The route, which hugs the east side of Frye Brook is easy to see.
While shorter than other trails, this one does have some exposed roots and a few rocks so be sure to watch your feet as you make your way to the waterfall.
Because this trail is an out-and-back route, you’ll know when you’ve come to the end. And this is where you’ll find the first fun swimming hole. Smaller, this is a good place for kids.
To find the larger swimming hole, continue along down the trail. This is where conditions might be a bit slippery depending on the weather and just how strong the waterfall is flowing.
You can plan on spending some time here splashing around, or take an extra-quick dip and make your way back by heading out the same way you came!
The Cataracts can be accessed year-round, but visitors say that it's best in the spring, summer, and fall months when conditions are less slippery. You can learn more about the trail and the waterfall by visiting alltrails.com.
