One of the best ways to remember all the ways we love Maine is to get outside and see the landscape! If you're a regular reader you'll know just how much we love hiking through the state to see just how varied the land can be. From forests to coastal paths, Maine offers a lot in the way of beautiful views and there's always something new to enjoy. We particularly love the trails that offer lots of different features and this one, in New Gloucester, does just that!
Big Falls Preserve in New Gloucester is home to the 1.7-mile Big Falls Loop Trail.
The route follows the former Woodman Road, then winds through the 40-acre preserve leading visitors under shaded trees in the summer, colorful foliage in autumn and white snowy branches in the winter.
It's beautiful year-round, but one of the most notable features is the stream that much of the trail follows once you've entered the wooded area.
In early spring, the stream will be heavy with water allowing for some impressive views of snow runoff.
The route is fairly simple to follow but the ground is sometimes rocky, so be sure to watch your step.
Don't forget to keep an eye out for the 1957 Plymouth that's been somehow abandoned on the trail!
Continue the route and you'll make your way closer to the waterfall. In the winter things here will be quiet, but in the spring and summer you might just hear the rush of the water.
And when you see it you'll remember just why you take these hikes!
Once you've taken it in, just continue following the blazes to the point where you began. It's the perfect loop trail!
Love the idea of exploring Maine's landscape of waterfalls? Then we've got just the trip for you! Maine's scenic waterfall loop will take you to 8 different waterfalls. It's sure to remind you just how great it is to explore the state!
