Visitors and residents of Maine alike know about places like Acadia National Park and some of the more famous state parks. In fact, aside from lobster rolls and lighthouses, Maine might be best known for its access to beautiful natural landscapes. That's why so many of these more well-known spots tend to be crowded and busy. To get off-the-beaten-path, consider visiting some of the under-the-radar natural areas like this spot in Boothbay Harbor. This loop hike in Maine is short but no less beautiful than any other of the more famous places.
Oak Point Farm in Boothbay Harbor is a beautiful place to spend the day outside any time of year.
The farm preserve is the headquarters of the Boothbay Region Land Trust and it's also a great jumping-off point to their network of preserves in the area.
It sits on over 2,000 feet of coastline on Hodgdon Cove and offers 32-acres to explore.
What makes it extra-special is that it's the only remaining undeveloped saltwater farm in town.
It's beautiful any time of year and while we love it in the summer, the winter offers a special kind of magic in the way that only Maine can.
Visitors can enjoy a few trails, but the most notable are the nearly 1-mile loop that circles the property and the .6-mile universal access trail.
The loop takes explorers first through fields, then through forest, and ultimately to a picturesque dock on Hodgeon Cove. Throughout the looped hike, there are views of both forests and water, which makes this a very Maine experience.
The universal access trail begins at the lower parking lot and makes its way across a bridge with handrails before splitting into two trails.
The trail is primarily five feet in width, though the bridge is about four feet. The only steep section is near the start of the trail at the farmhouse. There are also resting points along the way.
While we love the trails here, Oak Point Farm is a great destination to visit for fun outside like flying kites or other sports. Plan on checking out the trails and then enjoying some time on the property taking in the fresh air before heading out.
Oak Point Farm is best visited between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on weekdays. This is when the public restrooms in the farmhouse are open and staff is available to answer questions. You can learn more about visits and check out their calendar of events by visiting this page on the Boothbay Region Land Trust website. There's also a great deal of information on Maine Trail Finder. You can also follow them on Facebook. They can be reached at 207-633-4818.
For a more involved hike of over 8 miles check out this trail leading to multiple waterfalls in Maine. It's often called the Grand Canyon of the east!
