There are a lot of places in Maine that get so much attention they attract tourists from all over the world. Places like Acadia National Park as well as the rocky coast are captured in photos so frequently that it's nearly impossible not to equate them with the state. But if you know Maine intimately you know of her nooks and crannies and that includes the hidden wonders that are, arguably, more beautiful than the well-known ones. This hidden lagoon is a great example.
Hiding out in Maine's portion of the White Mountains is one of the most beautiful natural lagoons in New England. Head to Fryeburg to check it out!
The 2.1-mile trail begins off of Shell Pond Road. Look for signs indicating the Stonehouse Trail. There are a few options here, so you'll want to make sure you're paying careful attention to be sure you're in the right place.
The route is considered easy, both because it's straightforward and because the elevation gain is minimal at just 216 feet.
About a mile into your hike you'll find the trail veer. Look for the signs pointing towards "Rattlesnake Pool" and you'll be on your way!
The lagoon is fed by a small waterfall, adding to the beauty.
And the surrounding forest and rocks make the entire place feel like something from a fantasy movie.
This is a popular place to swim in the summer, but be ready for some seriously cold water no matter how hot the weather is outside! Once you've enjoyed yourself and spent some time, simply turn around and head back the same way you came.
As an alternative, you can take one of the trails here to make it to the summit of Blueberry Mountain.
This is a good way to dry off. Or, you can choose to do this hike first and cool down in Rattlesnake Pool once you're done. As with so many Maine trails there's a ton to enjoy here. Make a day of it if you can!
Rattlesnake Pool can be visited year-round and it offers beauty even when it's too cold to swim. However, the hike is best between April and October. You can learn more about the lagoon and the hike to find it by visiting alltrails.com. Furry puppy friends can come along, but be sure to keep them on a leash at all times.
For more hidden beauty in the state, consider taking a lesser-known hike. Borestone Mountain Base and Peregrine Trail is a gorgeous forest trail in Maine that will take you to a hidden overlook.
