One of the best parts about living in this region of the country is that once fall comes, our state begins turning into a vibrant and eye-catching masterpiece that's incredible to experience. Just recently, travel site Condé Nast Traveler included Maine on their list of the best places to view America's fall foliage. For most of the states that are tucked in the upper right hand corner of America, this week has been incredible for viewing fall foliage.
To make things simpler for readers, Condé Nast Traveler broke down their article by dividing things up between the East and the West. They also took things one step further and broke down each region by naming off which areas have the longest foliage season, where the best views are, which area has the most variety, where has the most intense colors and which region is the least crowded.

So, which category did Maine win? The less-crowded region to visit.
That's right! Our short but sweet fall foliage won the title of being the underrated gem of the East Coast. The travel site went on to explain that while we may have a shorter foliage season than some of our other surrounding states, if you can make the trip out here it'll be more than worth it. Another bonus? You won't find crazy expensive leaf-peeping rates here when it comes to a place to stay during this season.
The travel site suggests that visitors who are looking to experience our fall foliage should take an adventure out to Grafton Notch State Park in Newry.
Especially true for those of our visitors who are coming from out of state, Acadia National Park tends to be the popular place to visit no matter what time of year it is. Instead of dealing with all of the tourists and crowded trails there, Condé Nast Traveler suggests you avoid the chaos and head on over to Grafton Notch State Park in Newry instead.

The Pine Tree State is utterly packed with gorgeous natural wonders, but many require a hike to get to them. For various accessibility and other reasons, we often wish to see natural wonders in Maine that are quite close to where we park. Thankfully, there are several such places and Kettle Cove State Park in Maine is a splendid one.

Kettle Cove State Park is about 20 minutes south of Portland in a gorgeous area of cliffs and beaches that will take your breath away.
This view is only steps from the parking lot. There are magnificent cliffs here that gradually descend in height to become tide pools like these. What a view!
There’s an intriguing mustard-colored lichen that adorns the rocks and the cliffs here and adds a touch of surreal beauty to the place. They almost look like something Bob Ross might paint.
The rocks in the cove have fascinating striations and layers that almost make them look like petrified wood or abstract sculptures. Plus, there’s abundant wildlife here on the land and in the ocean.
A boardwalk ramp will lead you straight down to the beach that rests between the cliffs so you won’t have to step over rocks to get to it. Sitting and watching the waves is so relaxing.
If you do choose to take a serene stroll around the area, you’ll get stunning views of the cove and enjoy the beauty of the wildflowers that surround it. This is such an idyllic place.
Be sure to stick around for the spectacular sunset. It’s such a lovely place for a beach day, a light stroll, and for taking in some achingly beautiful natural scenery. It will most certainly be a day well spent.
