Parts of Maine are known for their rugged-nature and steep mountain summits. There's a reason why the Maine portion of the Appalachian Trail is considered one of the hardest of the entire 2,181 mile route. But, we want to make sure people realize that much of Maine is perfectly accessible to those who aren't necessarily looking to set any records. In fact, many of the easiest trails are also among the most beautiful. This easy hike to a waterfall in Maine is a great example.

Within the Vaughan Woods on the grounds of the Vaughan Homestead in Hallowell, there are numerous trails meandering through the nearly 240-acre recreation area.

The Corniche Trail and Heifer Field Loop Trail are just under 2-miles and offer some of the easiest, most enjoyable hiking in the area.

There are a few ways to start your journey. You can park behind the Hall-Dale High School located at 97 Maple St. in Farmingdale whenever school is not in session. From here you'll start your hike just next to the tennis courts on the west side.

You can also park at the corner of corner of Litchfield Rd. and Middle St. However, spots are a bit more limited in this area. From here you'll start the hike next to the information kiosk in the parking area.

The Corniche Trail is about a quarter of a mile beginning at the trailhead in Hallowell.

From here you can get to the Heifer Field Loop Trail, which is about 1.2 miles. It begins near the Driving Bridge east of Cascade Pond and forms a loop through the forest and open areas.

The trails are wide and smooth, making this an easy journey.

And, while the waterfall is the main attraction here, you certainly won't be disappointed with the many natural features along the way.

Keep an eye out for fairy houses as you walk along the river.

The sounds of cars can still be heard on certain portions of this hike, but the bubbling brook makes up for that.

Ultimately, you'll arrive at Vaughn's Dam Waterfall.

The main waterfall here is reached fairly quickly, which is great for young kids who might get bored.

Although, it's hard to get bored when you're surrounded by beauty like this.

The trails here are open year round. Dogs are allowed and you're likely to meet a few along the way. On nice days, the trails tend to be busy so this might not be a great choice if you're looking for peace and quiet on a weekend. Plan to head here during the week if you're looking for a less-busy route.
