When warm weather arrives in Maine, we start planning all the things we'll be doing for the next few months. After all, there are just a few months here to enjoy it! While you plan beach trips and head upta camp, remember that not all of Maine's waterways are obvious. One of our favorite places to take a refreshing dip is at this beautiful swimming hole tucked away in the woods!
When the summer heats up you’re going to want to head to Bethel to find Frenchman's Hole.
The swimming hole is fed by the Sunday River where it comes off the mountain and runs through the area creating a pool.
The swimming hole is clear and beautiful, great for either wading or even just looking at from the shore. But what makes this place extra-special is the adventure you can have here!
At one end of the swimming hole, a waterfall feeds the pool making for a fun area to jump!
The falls drop about 20-30 feet, which means this is for the folks who really want to make a splash!
Take a leap and land in the deep pool below, but be sure to check the depth before doing it. And, be sure to be mindful of the current underneath.
While a warm day will see this place fairly busy, you can always make your way further down the river to find other areas in which to splash and swim. Once you’ve enjoyed the jump, head to the right of the waterfall where you should find a rope to help you get back to the top to do it all over again.
While Frenchman’s Hole is a bit hidden, you can find it easily enough. There are clickable directions below, or simply head to North Bethel, where you'll drive northwest on Sunday River Road. You’ll pass the covered bridge and then find two logging bridges. Cross the bridges and make a right. You’ll soon see the parking area.
