If we had a nickel for every time we saw a beautiful photo of something in Maine that required a ten-mile hike to access, we’d be very rich. Sometimes it can seem like all of the most awe-inspiring parts of the state are hidden within the forest or a state park that requires a day of sweaty activity to access. But, the reality is that there are plenty of things to see here that are really quite easy to find. This waterfall requires no hiking and it’s one of the most impressive in the state!
One of the best things about a drive-up waterfall is the ability to enjoy the scenery leading up to arrival at the falls. Coos Canyon is located just off of Route 17 scenic highway, making the journey just as great as the destination!
Coos Canyon has been carved by the Swift River.
The falls have a 15-foot drop, but don't scoff at that! The area is massive, which means the falls come from many different directions making for a full waterfall experience complete with the sound of rushing water and spray.
Because you can drive right up to these falls, they're accessible throughout the year.
Summer is great for swimming and wading in the water resulting from spring snow thaw.
But the winter offers an experience that's beautiful and quiet.
Some say the best time to visit is between April and November, when the water rushes at its heaviest.
The parking area of the falls is located right along the river, which means you can be in or around the beauty in no time.
You won't find a towering waterfall here, but you will find evidence of Maine's fascinating geology as well as the all encompassing beauty of the state's nature.
Camping is available in the summer months, but a day trip is easily possible.
