Did you know that there’s a piece of history tucked away in a hiking trail just outside of New Orleans? This particular trail has the best of both worlds, there’s an abundance of nature to explore and history buffs will be fascinated when they get to the end of the trail. Let’s take a closer look.
Located in Belle Chasse, The Woodlands Conservancy is a wonderful space that’s perfect for an afternoon adventure.
The Woodlands Conservancy was formed to promote, preserve, and restore our wetlands and provide a habitat for wildlife and migratory birds.
The 630-acre site contains over 10 miles of trails, perfect for hiking, birdwatching, and photography.
The trail system runs along a spill-bank that features beautiful views of the wetlands in the area.
Perhaps the most unique part of the trails is the grouping of World War II Ammunition Magazines.
There are a few different trails to choose from, but you’ll find the ammunition magazines towards the end of the Bottomland Hiking Trail.
The area was purchased by the Navy and commissioned as the Marine Base Naval Ammunition Depot for New Orleans around 1939. Ammunition would come in by ships and trains, where it would be stored in these spaces. Small arms for machine guns, shells, and black powder were the main products stored here.
So come take a walk through some beautiful scenery, see some wildlife, and check out a piece of the past.
