Are you looking for somewhere near New Orleans to clear your head and get in touch with the beautiful nature that surrounds us? There is a great place right across Lake Pontchartrain that is perfect for the winter season. It's called Big Branch National Wildlife Refuge and it's really lovely, especially in the winter.
Are you ready to explore a unique area right outside of the city of New Orleans.
Near Slidell and Lacombe, the Big Branch National Wildlife Refuge includes a beautiful walkway path. This map makes it easy to identify where the trail is. You should take the I-10 Twinspan East from New Orleans to arrive here.
Known as the Boy Scout Trail, it is a 4.6 mile hike that takes you through some beautiful marshes.
The address is 29856-30300 Paquet Rd Lacombe, LA.
The marshes and estuaries that make up the Mississippi River Delta are some of the most unique natural sights in the country.
It's not the same kind of majestic views you get in the west, but the amount of life oozing out of the land here will definitely amaze you.
At the right seasons, you'll be treated to large expanses of marsh pond covered in water lillies.
Other beautiful marsh and swamp plants include Louisiana irises and water hyacinth.
Even though the water hyacinth pictured here are beautiful, they are actually a huge issue for the swamp.
These invasive species are very aggressive and form mats on the tops of ponds, causing the fish below to be deprived of oxygen.
You'll be charmed by the pathways through this swamp which are always in flux.
There's something so peaceful about being in this fertile area in the winter, when many things are in a more withdrawn state.
So consider your next stop when you want to get away from it all this unique trip.
We think you will fall in love with all of the beautiful wildlife here.
