Sometimes, you just need a break from it all and need a little "me" time. When those moments occur, there's no better place to spend time with yourself than surrounded by towering pines, beautiful cypress trees, and the sights and sounds of songbirds above. We've got some of the most tranquil nature areas and trails near New Orleans that are perfect for those moments when you need a little escape.
1. Bottomland Trail
This hidden gem is over in Belle Chasse at the Woodlands Conservancy, and will take you on a journey. The trail is just over 5 miles, and features lovely views, plenty of shade, beautiful wildflowers, and perhaps the most interesting find on the trail: a collection of Ammunition Magazines left over from WWII.
2. Bayou Sauvage Ridge Trail
This beloved trail is great for those quick trips when you don’t have a ton of time to spare, but you still want to get your nature fix in for the day. The scenic views are refreshing, just make sure to bring sunscreen, since there’s not much shade on the trail.
3. Northlake Nature Center
Just across the Causeway lies the Northlake Nature Center, a beautiful natural oasis with multiple trails to explore. Stroll through the swamps, gaze out at the marsh, and listen to the sounds of the wildlife in the distance.
4. John Slidell Park Trail
This 1.6-mile paved trail is great for a casual stroll, a bike ride, or rollerblading. It’s also ideal for kids. So really, just about everyone can enjoy this short and sweet trail!
5. Nature Center Loop At Tickfaw State Park
If you’re up for a little road trip, the trails at Tickfaw State Park never disappoint. There are several trails within the park, each one is a different length so you can mix and match to fit your schedule. The Nature Center Loop Trail is just shy of a mile and will lead you through a beautiful forest setting filled with cypress trees and swampy scenery.
6. Mandalay Nature Trail
Another road trip from New Orleans, but worth every mile. Located in the Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge, this trail is just under a mile but don’t let the length fool you, there’s a lot to see. You’ll stroll through beautiful wetlands and have some amazing overlooks along the way, plus ample opportunities to spot wildlife.
7. The Mandeville Lakefront
Sure, New Orleans also has a lakefront with a great view, but why not take a little drive to experience something different? While not necessarily a trail, you can certainly walk up and down the lakefront, and the views of Lake Pontchartrain are simply mesmerizing. This is one of those spots you’ll want to hit around dusk, so you can watch the sun set over the water for a picture-perfect evening.
