This Abandoned Railway Hike In Louisiana Is A Historic Treasure
The Tammany Trace is Louisiana's only rail-to-trail conversion, offering a scenic 31-mile path through charming towns for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders.
The railroad has a long history with Lousiana. But what do you do when a railroad track has been abandoned and no longer in use? As they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure, and that's just what the folks in St. Tammany Parish did when they created Louisiana's only rail-to-trail conversion that will take you through some of the most charming towns in Louisiana. The Illinois Central Railroad was once a lifeline for St. Tammany Parish.
What was once a thriving industry for delivering goods and a popular method of transportation for people was eventually abandoned in the early 1990s.

With the help of federal aid, St. Tammany Parish purchased the abandoned railroad track with the intention of paving it and transforming it into a recreational path for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders.
The parish purchased a portion of the track in 1992 and in 1994, the first section of the trail — an 8.5-mile stretching running from Abita Springs to Mandeville — was opened.
Today the Tammany Trace stretches for 31 miles across five cities.
And is continuously being updated. In fact, earlier this year they began work on adding a tunnel where it crosses a busy stretch of LA-59 just north of Mandeville. That project is slated to be completed in 2020.

The paved trail is great for cyclists and rollerbladers, but also perfect for a casual afternoon stroll.
Each trailhead features different attractions, such as splash pads, rest areas, etc. You can also hop off the trail to grab a bite to eat or explore these charming towns on foot before hopping back on the trail.
Along the way, you’ll cross over beautiful water views.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Clocking in at just shy of five miles, the Comite Park Loop trail is a favorite for folks in the Greater Baton Rouge Area looking to escape to a more peaceful setting.
The trail is ideal for mountain biking, and many bikers will tell you that it’s one of the best mountain bike trails in Louisiana. I’ve yet to tackle this trail on a mountain bike, but I do enjoy walking this trail when the weather is nice.
The weather plays a big role in how much you will enjoy this trail. The area is prone to flooding, and it’s common for the trail to wash out during a storm. It’s best to tackle this iconic trail in Louisiana when it has not rained in a while.
Like many of Louisiana’s waterfront trails, the bugs can make or break your experience. Mosquitos also love this trail, so either walk faster than them or load up on a good bug spray before you hit the trail.
Your four-legged fur baby is welcome to join you on this trail, just make sure they are kept on a leash. Wildlife sightings are common on the trail, including snakes. Some of them may be venomous, so keeping your pup on a leash minimizes the chances of a surprise encounter.
There are a few different off-shoot trails you can take on this loop. I’d recommend having an AllTrails account handy just to make sure you’re on track. It’s easier than you think to wander off the main loop. The signage could be better, so keep AllTrails open while you’re hiking.
Scenic views and overlooks on this trail are too many to count. Hopefully, there’s a nice breeze when you visit, and you can stop for a bit and admire the views without getting eaten alive by those pesky skeeters. You can always come back in the winter when there are fewer bugs.
There are plenty of hiking trails near Baton Rouge to explore. I’d recommend checking out the trails at the Frenchtown Road Conservation Area or the Black Swamp Trail in Baton Rouge. The latter is a beautiful boardwalk trail that’s also kid-friendly.
