Winter in Louisiana can be all over the place. You can be in a sweater in the morning, flip flops by lunch, and back under the blankets by sunset. Although Louisiana isn't known for being a winter wonderland, the northern part of the state does see some snow, and if you time it right, you can experience one of the best winter towns in Louisiana: Homer.
This tiny little town in Claiborne Parish is home to about 2,500 people, and it's the perfect winter town in Louisiana to visit when you need to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and find yourself in a more natural setting.
Here are some of our favorite things to do in Homer:
The downtown area is full of historic buildings, and the Herbert S. Ford Memorial Museum is one of the top attractions here.
Housed in the former Claiborne Hotel, this museum puts a focus on local history and culture covering everything from early pioneers and Native Americans to the oil boom and the L&NW Railroad.
The main attraction in Homer is Lake Claiborne State Park, and you'll want to spend a few days here.
The park's white sandy beach makes it a favorite summer attraction, but this park has a year-round charm that shouldn't be passed up.
The 643-acre state park is nestled along the shores of Lake Claiborne, a 6,400-acre lake that’s a fisherman’s paradise.
Largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish are just a few examples of what you could reel in from these waters.
Now, Claiborne State Park is beautiful year-round, but if you can time it during a snowfall, it becomes a magical winter wonderland to explore.
Louisiana doesn't see very much snowfall, but Northern Louisiana is your best option if you do want to catch some flurries. February is your best bet for seeing snow, though January and March have brought some flurries in years past! With how crazy the weather has been in 2023, who knows what this winter will bring.
There are over 10 miles of hiking and biking trails to explore, which are just dreamy when covered in snow.
The park is also home to two 18-basket disc golf courses, so you'll never run out of outdoor activities.
You've got plenty of options for lodging. The cabins are incredibly cozy and can sleep up to eight people.
There are also several RV slots for you to hook up.
If you don't have an RV but are thinking about converting to this lifestyle, I'd highly recommend checking out RVShare. They offer a wide range of RVs and even offer delivery service, so you can try it out and see if you can see yourself living the RV life.
Or you may want to pitch a tent and spend the night under the stars!
Imagine waking up to waterfront views like this.
If you didn't catch anything on the lake, don't worry, Port Au Prince Restaurant is located on the other side of the lake and offers spectacular dockside dining.
The family-owned eatery has been around for over 50 years. Come hungry! The all-you-can-eat-catfish is a fan favorite.
Check out the Port Au Prince menu on the restaurant's website.
