Stretching over 124,000 acres across Cameron Parish, the Sabine National Wildlife Refuge is one of the most beautifully raw landscapes in Louisiana. This wildlife sanctuary is the largest coastal marsh refuge along the Gulf Coast and is a home for countless critters including alligators, blue crabs, shrimp, and over 200 species of birds. There's a short-and-sweet trail within the refuge that’s one of the most scenic trails in the area and it’s perfect for an outdoor adventure, no matter what time of year you visit.
When you want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, the Sabine National Wildlife is just what you need.
The Wetland Walkway is a 1.5-mile trail that brings you through a portion of the wildlife refuge.
The trail is handicap-accessible and can be used year-round.
Just remember that since it's so close to the Gulf, the refuge can close during hurricane season (June 1 - November 30) and may take some damage if a hurricane makes landfall in the area.
Since it's such a short-and-sweet trail, it's a great trail to introduce the next generation of nature lovers.
There's little shade along the trail, so you may want to bring a hat and wear sunscreen. And remember, you'll be walking through the marsh, so bug spray is always recommended.
You're almost guaranteed to spot some wildlife along your walk.
In the summer months, you'll have no trouble spotting an alligator or two soaking up the sun.

As you traverse further into the freshwater marsh, the trail moves from pavement to boardwalk, allowing you to walk right over the marshy landscape.
There are plenty of benches and informational placards peppered along the trail.
The observation point is the perfect place to sit for a spell and admire the view.
Soak it in! The symphony of sounds that emit from the marsh is something you have to hear for yourself.
Pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic on the marsh! Just remember, never feed any of the local wildlife and always leave no trace so that others can enjoy the space for years to come.
