If you have never been kayaking or canoeing in the New Orleans area, you are really missing out. Some people consider the waterways around Louisiana some of the best places to go kayaking in the United States. Here are some of the closest pristine spots that we know you will love.
1) Bayou St. John
When you just want a quick paddle, Bayou St. John is the place you should pick. You can gather a group of friends or just pop your own boat in for a sweet ride all the way to Lake Pontchartrain. And there are a number of tour companies that you can take trips with as well.
2) Bayou Bienvenue
Head out to New Orleans east and take a paddle out around Bayou Bienvenue, an area of marsh that is simply beautiful. It is also under great threat, and by paddling here you can see the damage coastal wetland lost is experiencing today.
3) Honey Island Swamp
One of the most pristine swamps in the area, Honey Island Swamp is found just around Slidell. It's a gorgeous area filled with awesome wildlife and incredible trees. You will simply fall in love.
4) Horn Island
Do you want a true paddling adventure? Try a paddle out to one of the Gulf Coast's remaining barrier islands. It will be a trip you will never forget.
5) Manchac Swamp
Go out towards Baton Rouge and I-10 and you'll pass through this beautiful swamp. Paddling through is even better. There are some amazing birds and other wildlife to be spotted here as well.
How many of these spots have you gone boating on? What are your favorites? What kind of kayak do you think is best? Which tour groups are your favorites? We love to hear all of your comments and feedback!
