Hodges Gardens is one of the best kept secrets in Louisiana and should absolutely be on everyone’s list to get a full perspective on the beauty that Louisiana has to offer.
More than 4,500 acres of these beautiful and historic gardens provide one of the greatest places in Louisiana to relax and enjoy an afternoon.
The gardens are located near the Toledo Bend Reservoir in Sabine Parish, Hodges Gardens can be found on U.S. Highway 171, 15 miles south of Many, LA, between Florien and Hornbeck.
It is the largest horticultural park and recreation area in the United States and the newest state park in Louisiana system.
Hodges Gardens was developed by A. J. Hodges, a native of Cotton Valley in Webster Parish.
He originally purchased over 100,000 acres of cut-over barren land and transformed into the luscious gardens we see today.
He landscaped the garden to include waterfalls, pools, a geyser, and fountains, that are all provided water from a man-made lake built in 1954.
The park opened for the public in 1956 and was transferred to a non-profit foundation in 1960. In 2007, it became part of the Louisiana public parks system.
The park offers an amazing array of natural and imported flora and fauna.
The renowned naturalist, botanist, and conservationist Caroline Dormon was brought in to develop the gardens and is credited with the beauty you can see today.
There are also plentiful recreation opportunities around the lake, including kayak and canoe rentals, a fishing pier, a lookout tower, a lodge for large groups, and of course the gorgeous and unique water features.
It's the perfect place for retreats and family reunions.
The flowers and plants in the area are probably the biggest attraction however, offering tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, water lilies, and so much more.
