Not too long ago, alligators were on the brink of extinction. Luckily, they were taken off the endangered species list in 1987 and thanks to conservation efforts, their numbers have steadily increased over the years. With numbers reaching close to two million, Louisiana is home to the largest population of alligators in the United States. If you’ve ever been interested in learning more about Louisiana’s state reptile, then you need to take a road trip over to the Insta-Gator Ranch & Hatchery near New Orleans, where’ you’ll learn all about this prehistoric beast.
Insta-Gator Ranch & Hatchery is a working alligator ranch that’s home to more than 2,000 alligators.
They’re committed to demystifying these beautiful beasts through hands-on exhibits, presentations, and guided tours.
On your guided tour, you’ll learn about the history of the American Alligator, from the days of the dinosaur to present days preservation efforts.
You’ll get the opportunity to see a Nile Crocodile up close and even get to see the teeth and claws of one of their baby American Alligators, as well as learn the difference between the two.
Your tour will take you through their temperature controlled alligator barn, where you’ll see alligators ranging in size from 2 feet to 8 feet long, and get to watch feeding time!
But the most exciting part comes at the end of the tour, where you’ll have the change to hold a baby alligator!
If you’re really brave, you can reach into the pool and grab one. Don't worry, their mouths are taped so they can't bite you.
Alligators hatch in the fall, and you’ll want to book another trip in August-September so you can watch this incredible show.
