There are 21 state parks in Louisiana, and each one has something unique to offer. If you find yourself in Washington Parish, you need to take the time to visit Bogue Chitto State Park. It’s a secluded treasure that nature lovers will find hard to leave.
One of the newer state parks to Louisiana, the Bogue Chitto State Park has only been around since 2010, but it’s captured the hearts of many nature lovers in Washington Parish.
Clocking in at 1,786 acres, it’s one of the largest state parks in Louisiana.
Nestled along the Bogue Chitto River, it’s a popular summer spot for those looking to cool off during the summer heat.
Swimming, fishing, and kayaking are all great summertime activities at the park.
In addition to the 4-mile mountain bike trail and 14 miles of equestrian trails that weave throughout the park, there are several pedestrian trails that will take you on quite the journey.
The Gorge Run Trail, in particular, is uniquely special.
Along your walk, you’ll encounter a beautiful array of wildflowers.

During the springtime, the trail really comes alive with pops of color.
One of the most incredible hidden gems of the park lies at the end of the trail.
Fricke’s Cave, which actually resembles more of a gorge, is perhaps one of the most unique landscapes in Louisiana.
These delicate sandstone spires are formed when water erodes the surface, creating little two-foot-tall fingers of sandstone.
Boardwalks have been built around the spires to protect them, so you can get a bird's eye view of these cool formations.
