The Kisatchie National Forest has more than 600,000 acres to explore. It spans across seven parishes, and it’s so large that it’s divided into five Ranger Districts. Each district has its own set of trails to explore, with tons of camping, picnicking, swimming, and hiking opportunities. Here are some of the best trails to go hiking in the Kisatchie National Forest.
1. Backbone Trail


It's roughly a 10-mile loop trail that will lead you through a thick forest of oak trees and evergreens. The trail can get a little hilly, but overall a moderately difficult trail.
2. Big Branch Trail


Big Branch Trail is a 9.5-mile loop trail located near Pitkin with beautiful wildflowers and luscious greenery.
3. Caroline Dormon Trail


The Caroline Dormon Trail is just over 10 miles and is moderate in difficulty. This trail is great for mountain biking, if you’re looking for a new place to ride!
4. Longleaf Vista Trail


This trail is a 1.5-mile loop trail located near Cloutierville and offers some beautiful vista views you typically don’t see in Louisiana.
5. Magnolia Forest Walk


This moderately difficult trail is almost 6 miles long and located near Elmer, Louisiana.
6. Sugar Cane Trail


This trail is near Minden and it's roughly 6.5 miles long and is filled with beautiful views of Caney Lake.
7. Wild Azalea Trail


At 31 miles, the Wild Azalea Trail is the longest trail in Louisiana. Its end points are the Valentine Lake Recreation Area and the Woodworth Town Hall. Don’t worry, if you’re not up for hiking the whole 31 miles, there are several places to hop on and off the trail.
