New Orleans City Park was created in 1854, and attracts roughly five million visitors every year. This 1,300 acre public park is filled with dozens of attractions that cater to both kids and adults alike, and it’s no wonder it’s one of the most visited urban public parks in the country. We’ve found some amazing photographs of this lovely park to share, so let’s take a walk down memory lane.
1. When City Park first opened in 1854, it extended about 100 acres back from City Park Avenue (originally Metairie Road). It wasn’t until 1891 that the City Park Improvement Association was founded, and the area was officially established as City Park.

2. Since it opened, City Park has become a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
No matter what time of year. This photo was taken during Easter in 1915.
3. While the park has undergone many renovations in the last century, some things have remained the same.
Like this iconic arch bridge. This photo is from 1942!
4. It’s easy to forget how old this park is.
Until you see photographs like this.
5. Many a musician has played their hearts out at Popp’s Bandstand.
This photo was taken in 1936. The bandstand itself was built in 1917.
6. The carousel is one of the most popular attractions at City Park, and also one of the oldest.
It dates back to 1906! Over a century later, and children still have the delight of riding the "flying horses".
