In south central Louisiana you'll find one of our country's most magical natural resources, The Atchafalaya Swamp. Nestled in the heart of Cajunland, The Atchafalaya Swamp is more than just a swamp. It's a major resource for the people who live around it, and a major contribution to our Cajun and Creole roots. Let's take a look at some reasons why it's so special.
The Atchafalaya Swamp (aka The Atchafalaya Basin) is the largest river swamp in the country.
It's approximately 1.4 million acres!
The swamp is a combination of wetlands and river delta area where the Atchafalaya River meets the Gulf of Mexico.
The Atchafalaya is unique because it is a growing delta system. It's constantly changing!
The cypress-tupelo swamps are the largest remaining continuous tract of coastal cypress tress in the United States.
They're easily one of the most recognizable trees in Louisiana. Some cypress trees date back to the Louisiana Purchase, and you can take a Cypress Tree Tour to see them all.
The best way to experience this vast swampland is by boat.
This isn't exactly the type of view you get from a sidewalk. :o)
There are tons of great swamp and air boat tours.
The tour guides have all grown up in the area and are extremely knowledgeable about the swamps/bayous and love to share their stories. Atchafalaya Basin Backwater Adventure Swamp Tour is just one of them (located at 240 Fandall Street, Gibson, LA 70356 but click here to see other tour companies.
So many animals call this area their home.
Alligators, turtles, beavers, nutria, snakes, hundreds of species of birds (including the bald eagle!) among hundreds of others. Even bobcats and the elusive Louisiana black bear!
You know what else calls this place home?
Crawfish!
It's estimated that 22 million pounds of crawfish are harvested from the basin every year.
That's a lot of mudbugs!
If you want to really immerse yourself in the swamp, rent a houseboat for the weekend!
Experience all the Atchafalaya has to offer in a houseboat. Spend your days curled up on the porch with a good book and a great view, and spend your evenings listening to the crickets while gazing up at the stars. Houseboat Adventures is wonderful and they're located at 1399 Henderson Levee Rd, Breaux Bridge, LA 70517.
So next time you're in the mood to go on an adventure, head out to the Atchafalaya Basin.
It's simply magical.
