Here in New Orleans, you don't have to travel far to get up close and personal with wildlife. From the swamps and bayous to the zoo and aquarium, there are multiple attractions around the city where you can have a once-in-a-lifetime animal encounter. In no particular order, here are some of our favorites.
1. Aquarium
Located right on the Mississippi River, the aquarium will take you through an underwater world where you’ll have the chance to see sharks, sea otters, sea turtles, hundreds of fish, and so much more. 1 Canal St., New Orleans, LA 70130.
2. Audubon Zoo
This 58 acre zoo opened in 1914 and is currently home to more then 2,000 animals of all shapes and sizes. From leopards to orangutans and everything in between, everyone has a memorable time at the Audubon Zoo. 6500 Magazine St., New Orleans, LA 70118.
3. The Butterfly Garden & Insectarium
The Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium is located on Canal Street is the largest museum devoted to insects in North America. You’ll learn about the importance of these little critters, and maybe even eat a cricket or two. 423 Canal St., New Orleans, LA 70130.
4. Global Wildlife
This one isn’t in New Orleans, but it’s so unique that we had to put it on the list. Get up close and personal with exotic animals like giraffes, zebras, and bison as you take a covered wagon tour through their habitat. The wagons make multiple stops, and the animals will come right up to the wagon and you can feed them. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. 26389 LA 40, Folsom, LA 70437.
5. Take a swamp tour
Airboat Adventures will take you out on a thrilling high-speed airboat ride where you’ll be surrounded by a beautiful cypress swamp that’s home to hundreds of alligators, turtles, fish, raccoons, owls, egrets, and so much more. 6. Insta-Gator
Another fun animal adventure is the Insta-Gator Ranch, located across the Causeway. Home to more then 2,000 alligators, you’ll learn all about their habitat, lifestyle, and even get the opportunity to hold a baby gator! 74645 Allen Road, Covington, LA 70435.
