You’ll find the Northlake Nature Center across the lake in Mandeville, not far from Fontainebleau State Park.
Established in 1982, this hidden gem is actually 400 acres of some of the most picturesque scenery in the area.
Nestled up against Bayou Castine, the nature center allows visitors to view three different ecosystems: a hardwood forest, a pine-hardwood forest, and a pond-swamp.
The ponds in the cypress swamp are actually due to beaver dams, and you’ll be able to see a beaver lodge from one of the boardwalks along the trails.
There are over 8 miles of trails to explore at the Northlake Nature Center.
Each one is less than two miles, so you can easily tackle them all in one day to get the full experience.
Each trail has multiple scenic spots, so be sure to bring your camera.
Tons of wildlife also call the area home, so keep your eyes peeled. Turtles, gators, snakes and countless species of birds are all frequently sighted in the area.
The Nature Center makes for the perfect family outing, or a peaceful spot to retreat to when you need to recharge.
And it’s the perfect time of year to get outside and explore, since the temperatures are dropping and you won’t encounter as many mosquitoes.
