Though Missouri might be known as the Cave State, Kentucky has quite a few caves of our own just waiting to be discovered. After all, Mammoth Cave, which lies under Kentucky, is the longest cave system in the world and features its very own national park of the same name. But you can also find countless underground wonders outside of this magnificent park — if you know where to look, that is. Today, we’re taking you on an unforgettable adventure that not only features cavernous wonders and unique rock formations, but also an enchanting waterfall and jaw-dropping panoramic views. It truly doesn’t get better than this.
Nestled within the Big South Fork National Recreation Area is the Yahoo Falls Scenic Area; a place full of natural beauty and a hiking trail sure to satisfy your need for adventure.
The moderately trafficked, trail leads hikers down a long flight of steep stairs into the gorge past cliffs and nearly-vertical slopes adorned with lush mountain laurel, rhododendron, and many threatened and endangered plant species.
Along the trail, you will discover incredible rock formations...
...as well as simply breathtaking vistas.
Eventually, you will reach the main attraction: the beautiful 113-foot Yahoo Falls. Take it all in; this is said to be one of the tallest waterfalls in the state.
Do note that the waterfall is seasonal, so unless you're visiting after a period of significant rainfall, you might only discover a trickle of water.
After you’ve admired the falls, it’s time to continue along the path, passing behind the falls under one of the largest rock shelters in the area.
Don’t forget your camera — this is one of the prettiest trails you’ll find in Kentucky, no matter when you visit. Spring promises wildflowers, while vibrant foliage abounds in autumn.
Yahoo Falls Trail has it all. A stunning waterfall? Check. Gorgeous views? Absolutely. Fascinating geology? Yup. What more could you ask for in a short hike?
In addition to the Yahoo Falls Trail, you will also find a primitive campsite and picnic area as well as restrooms and scenic overlooks.
