Land Between the Lakes (LBTL) is an absolutely splendid area with a rich and engaging landscape. This region stretches across the Kentucky and Tennessee borders, right between Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. While there are numerous hiking opportunities within LBTL, we're partial to the Honker Lake Trail, a five-mile water trail in Kentucky that traverses some of the state's best scenery and makes you feel as though you're one with your surroundings.
John Muir famously said, "The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness." While we're not ones to disagree with the Father of National Parks, here in Kentucky, we're inclined to think that the clearest way to the Universe is...
..through the water!
Kentucky is a state with great love for the water. While many think of the Bluegrass as, well rolling blue(grass) hills and underground caverns, the state is a veritable aquatic playground!
There is perhaps nowhere in Kentucky that epitomizes this more than the aptly named Land Between the Lakes (LBTL).
Land Between the Lakes is one of The Bluegrass State’s most glorious gems, offering unparalleled outdoor recreation and stunning scenery. It’s 170,000 acres of beaches, trails, and wilderness, surrounded by two majestic lakes.
One of the newest features Land Between The Lakes are its water trails. These designated Kentucky water trails provide wildlife-viewing opportunities for kayaks and canoes while exploring the shorelines of Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley.
Incredibly, the trails not only explore the perimeters and shorelines...
...they also venture through the heart of this aquatic paradise! There are a handful of water trails in LBTL, but we're partial to Honker Lake. This is a shallow lake with several lily pads boasting beautiful sunsets. Eagles, osprey, cormorants, beavers, deer, and other fauna can been seen here. Paddlers can run up Long Creek to near Hematite Dam.
In addition to the spectacular flora and fauna, this trail literally goes right through the waters! So whether you're paddling or simply enjoying this Kentucky water trail on foot, you'll feel at one with your surroundings...
...so much so that you might even imagine you're walking on water! How marvelous.
Have you tacked this water trail in Kentucky before? Did you know LBTL had these awesome aquatic trails? Visit the Land Between the Lakes website for more information about these water trails.
Looking for more water-centered fun in Kentucky? We absolute LOVE this spot that's the best kayaking lake in Kentucky.
