Dog Slaughter Falls in Kentucky is one of those destinations where the journey is just as marvelous as the destination. The eponymous Dog Slaughter Falls Trail is a stunning, 2.8-mile path that traverses the beautiful landscape near Corbin, Kentucky, one of the most wondrous regions of the state. The trail is accessible and scenic, and in addition to spectacular scenery along the path, it features a gorgeous waterfall swimming hole at the end. Is there anything better? We sure don't think so. Here’s how to explore Dog Slaughter Falls in Kentucky for yourself.
First of all, you’ll want to hop on the trailhead of your choosing. The first is about 2.8 miles down Forest Road 195 from its junction with KY-90.
From here, the hike to the waterfall is just about a mile. This is the shorter route and will give you a round-trip of about two miles.
The second trailhead is located on Forest Road 195, about 0.8 miles from its junction with KY-90.
This path is perfect if you want to fill a whole afternoon with woodland exploration, as its twice as long as the first.
Both of the trails remain at a pretty steady elevation the whole way, though you do gain about 60 meters near the end of the hike.
On your way, you’ll pass through groves of shady trees, clusters of rhododendrons, and even travel over a charming forest bridge.
This trail is dog-friendly and good for kids and families.
The stony bits can get a bit slippery after a rainstorm or very early in the morning, so be sure to wear shoes with some grip.
Though the trail is shaded for the most part, you’ll still be vulnerable to the sun. Slather on that sunscreen and bug spray just to be safe.
Prepare for some serious beauty when you reach the end.
The waterfall is about 15 feet tall and no matter what the season, it looks unbelievably picturesque. You’ll want to bring a camera on this hike for sure.
These falls are more likely to be flowing during dry spells, even when other regional waterfalls have vanished.
Swimming here is made all the more appealing by the pure, blue color of the water.
There’s also a pretty little stretch of sand that’s perfect for sunbathing or picnicking. Depending on the recent weather conditions and the time of year, the water can be quite shallow or significantly deeper. Always keep an eye on kids and pets.
