During full moons on clear nights in Kentucky, you have the chance to see a natural phenomenon that doesn’t occur anywhere else in the western hemisphere. Travel to Cumberland Falls near Corbin, KY to see the famous moonbow.
This is Cumberland Falls, the Niagra of the South.
Whether you're visiting Cumberland Falls during the day or night, this waterfall is going to be stunning. At 125 feet wide, it's a true natural gem. However, snapping a few photos of the moonbow should definitely go on your Kentucky bucket list.
This is the only other place in the Western Hemisphere where a moonbow occurs.
This lunar rainbow can only be seen during a five-day window surrounding a full moon on clear nights.
Light from the moon is refracted off the mist of the falls, creating the moonbow. In fact, the only other place in the world where you can see a moonbow with regularity is Victoria Falls in Zambia, Africa.
Take a short hike to get to the best viewing spot.
Use the Cumberland Falls Trail to get to some prime viewing spots if you're there to see the moonbow. The trail is only about half a mile, and is paved and smooth, making it easy to navigate in the dark.
Stay at the Dupont Lodge.
A great place to stay during your trip to Cumberland Falls to see the moonbow is Dupont Lodge. This resort is only about a mile from Cumberland Falls and has a river view. They also offer other outdoor activities such as swimming in their pool, fishing, kayaking, horseback riding, and access to other hiking trails.
During summer months, you can get up close and personal with the Falls.
Sheltowee Trace Outfitters offers a "Rainbow Mist Ride" and other rafting opportunities for folks wanting to get closer to the Falls than the trail allows.
