It's a well-known fact (at least for those of us who love Kentucky) that our state is stunningly beautiful. There's a reason Daniel Boone once said, "Heaven must be a Kentucky kind of place." The Bluegrass State has a magical landscape with rolling hills, grazing horses, climbing mountains, crystal clear lakes, and some of the best sunsets in the world. The endless skies in Kentucky seem to burst open at sunset and there's a surprising spot in the northern part of our state where you can experience that moment firsthand.
In these exquisite photos by Bill Fultz, the skies and natural beauty of Doe Run Lake Park have been perfectly captured. This little park is a hidden gem and happens to be an enchanting place to catch one of those famous Kentucky sunsets.
Doe Run Lake Park is located in Kenton County near the towns of Covington, Erlanger, and Independence. Its 183 acres are tucked away from a major road and it's a favorite hidden gem of locals.
At first appearance, the park doesn't seem like much. The lake is about 30 acres and a good spot for fishing or kayaking, and it is a nice little place to relax and be in nature. However, there is something extra special about this park and you'll find it simply by looking up.
The seemingly endless skies above Doe Run Lake take on a magical quality as the day draws to an end. Sunset is extra special, but they really are exceptional any time of day.
In addition to the skies and lake, there is a 2.9-mile hiking trail that takes you around the water.
The trail can be muddy and a little tricky to follow at times, but it's a delightful trek through the woods that allows you to escape everyday life for a while.
But the lake and the way it's situated are the true highlight of this park and provide an enchanting backdrop for sunset each evening.
Photographer Bill Fultz is a master at capturing these moments as the sun dips below the trees and the vibrant colors are reflected in the water. Even if you're not a photographer, your eyes cannot to deny the natural beauty of these views in Kentucky.
If heaven is a Kentucky kind of place, then so is Doe Run Lake, especially at sunset.
No matter the time of day or the weather, magic seems to happen at this little park with endless skies, and we're lucky to have it right here in our beautiful state.
If you've discovered Doe Run Lake at sunset and didn't already love Kentucky, surely you left with a change of heart. Did you know about this enchanting park in our state? Do you have a sunset photo in Kentucky you'd like to share? Feel free to do so in the comments!
