Kentucky is undeniably beautiful. Those of us who call the Bluegrass State home already know this fact and visitors are often astounded at its abundant natural beauty. But if you had to choose the most beautiful area of Kentucky, what would you choose? We've gathered enough evidence to prove that scenic McCreary County in south central Kentucky just may run away with the prize.
You'll find a wide variety of natural beauty throughout all of Kentucky, but it's pretty amazing how concentrated it is within McCreary County. McCreary was the last formed county in Kentucky and it's almost as if they rounded up as many natural wonders as possible and encircled them in one county.
Possibly the most popular feature of this area is Cumberland Falls. This "Niagara of the South" is the main attraction of a large state park that includes many other beautiful places to explore. In fact, the county is full of endless waterfalls, some in plain sight and others magically hidden.
One of those more popular falls and trails is Eagle Falls. This lovely waterfall is also an ideal swimming hole on a hot day.
There are so many peaceful spots throughout the county; you can truly escape everyday life. The Gatliff Bridge, a two lane structure, crosses the Cumberland River and is one of many idyllic photo op spots throughout the county.
Amazingly, McCreary County is also home to a section of the Daniel Boone National Forest. One of the most recognizable features of this area is the Natural Arch. The trail around this wonder is the perfect opportunity to see yet another beautiful aspect of McCreary County.
Not to be outdone by the other parks in the area, Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area also spills over the Tennessee border into this Kentucky county. You can surround yourself with endless acres of scenic gorges and sandstone bluffs and you'll definitely want to seek out a little adventure with a kayak or rafting trip.
Within the Big South Fork Area is another notable waterfall - Yahoo Falls. While the flow of the water varies greatly, it is recognized as the tallest waterfall in Kentucky and to stand behind it is truly magical.
The Big South Fork Scenic Railway is a great way to experience the natural beauty of McCreary County. There are many options for rides and excursions, but I recommend visiting in the fall for truly awe-inspiring views.
Whether you choose to explore this lovely county by trail, kayak or even simply with a long, scenic drive, you'll love your time spent in McCreary County. Kentucky is beautiful and McCreary County is its crowning jewel.
McCreary County is chock full of natural beauty, so much so that you may never discover all of its wonders. But, that doesn't mean you shouldn't try. Have you spent time in McCreary county?
