It's easy to become overwhelmed when choosing an outdoor destination to explore in Kentucky. Our state is filled with a variety of trails, from paved paths around picturesque lakes to miles of rough terrain that are best left for the experts. Most of us fall somewhere in between and enjoy the adventure of being outdoors, but also the comfort of a well-marked, yet still intriguing, trail. In Carter Caves State Resort Park, you'll find such a trail where you'll see a little of everything. Three Bridges Trail is a magical Kentucky path that will bring out the explorer in just about everyone.
The Three Bridges Trail within Carter Caves State Resort Park is a 3.5 mile loop trail that winds through magical landscape and provides beautiful views.
You can access the trail from the visitor center parking lot and it continues to be well marked. It's rated as moderate for some elevation changes, but overall is appropriate for just about everyone.
Near the beginning of the trail, you may be surprised that it's something special, because it starts off with a walkway along a road, which you cross over a couple of times.
But the scenery develops and you'll soon experience stone stairways, mysterious rock formations and open caves.
Parts of the trail also overlook Smoky Valley Lake, so if you enjoy a water view during your hike, your needs will be beautifully met.
But the real stars of the show along this trail are its namesakes - Smoky Bridge, Raven Bridge, and Fern Bridge.
You'll encounter these three magical natural bridges along the trail, and you'll want to be sure to save some time to explore and take in their beauty.
Three Bridges Trail is one of those rare outdoor experiences where you get a lot of bang for your buck.
The varying terrain, three natural bridges, lake views and other rock formations all make this trail a unique and magical adventure that will make you want to explore even more of the Bluegrass State.
