When you think of hiking through an incredible gorge in Kentucky, more than likely Red River Gorge is the first spot that comes to mind. It's the area that even those outside of Kentucky have heard of, and it gets quite a bit of hype and attention, as it should! But, there is a lesser known gorge in Central Kentucky that is just as captivating and definitely more approachable for those who may not be ready for the intensity of Red River Gorge. Jessamine Creek Gorge is located near Lexington and is filled with natural beauty and adventure that makes it so worth exploring.
Located in beautiful Jessamine County, in the palisades region of the Kentucky River, Jessamine Creek Gorge Preserve is 155 acres of natural wonder.
As it is a nature preserve, you should aways be very kind to the surroundings and not disturb the foliage or formations along the trail. The area is very diverse in terms of what you will experience during your adventure and it offers something different with each season of the year.
The trail is 2.1 miles and rated as moderate. When you arrive (directions are linked below), there is a small parking lot, but no restroom facilities, so that is something to keep in mind.
The trail takes you out about a mile and then makes a small loop to then join back up with the original path. There are picnic tables about halfway through the hike, making for a great spot for a rest and a snack or picnic lunch.
Along the trail, you will see everything from unique rock formations, wildflowers, and waterfalls.
As a gorge, the rock formations are magical and intriguing and you will even find a few caves throughout, especially near the waterfall.
From spring through fall, you can expect to see an array of beautiful wildflowers and other blooming foliage.
The large falls - Overstreet Falls - is stunning after a rainfall or when frozen by a frigid winter.
It is somewhat difficult to reach this spot and get this view. You have to walk down a steep hill and be cautious of slippery mud and rock. If the timing is right with the weather, the sight can be one of the best waterfalls in the state.
In the cold of winter, this is still a memorable and enjoyable hike. With the falls, creek, and rock overhangs, you'll find yourself walking through a winter wonderland.
Many hikers who frequent this trail recommend going after a good rain, but not one so big that the creek will be washed out and the trail will be overly muddy. It is a delicate balance to get to see scenes like this. But when you do time it right, it's so worth the time spent exploring!
Jessamine Creek Gorge is a natural oasis in the heart of Kentucky that is a lovely place to experience all year long.
