The park is situated overlooking the Mississippi River, which many tend to forget even borders Kentucky. The Mighty Mississippi, including the land where this park is located, has long played a crucial part in America's history. The town of Columbus was actually once such an important city that many argued it should be the capital of the country, rather than Washington, D.C.!

The history of this land actually connects all the way back to the 1670s when it was explored by Frenchmen Marquette and Joliet. But the park's historical sites are mainly tied to its role within the Civil War, which was quite substantial. When the land was held as a Confederate fort, a chain was extended across the Mississippi to prevent Union forces from passing. A piece of that chain, as well as an anchor and other period pieces, can all be viewed at Columbus-Belmont State Park.

Also on the 160 acres of the park is a trail that winds through the landscape and past other Civil War-era sites, monuments, and relics. This beautiful park is a wonderful opportunity to step back in time.
