Most people think of visiting Kentucky's incredible state parks during the warmer months, but it turns out they are great places to seek out in the winter, as well. Fort Boonesborough State Park in Richmond is a popular summer destination for its recreated historic fort and museum, but it also happens to be a nice winter time excursion. If you're looking for a quick outdoor hike or a unique fireside activity, then look no further than this perfect winter destination in Kentucky.
Back when Kentucky was a wide open frontier, Daniel Boone and his followers founded Fort Boonesborough.
In 1775, the fort was founded as the second settlement in the state, and it was ideally located along the Kentucky River. Today, the fort has been recreated to be as it once was, so that we can all revisit and appreciate what life was like in the 18th-century. The fort is maintained and developed by the Fort Boonesborough Foundation, and they host events and activities there throughout the year. Although the fort is mainly closed during the winter, they do have a few opportunities to stop by and learn about the history.
And of course the park itself is open all year long so you can get some fresh air and relaxation time.
The park is made up of 153 acres of natural beauty and history. You can walk the short 1/2-mile trail—perfect for cold weather—and imagine what the frontiersman experienced in those early years in Kentucky.
In February, the foundation will host Fireside Chats, where you can enjoy a frontier-style meal and an intriguing history lesson.
These chats take place each Saturday in February and spots fill up fast, so if you're interested, be sure to follow the link below for reservations. Along with dinner, you'll be treated to a first-person account from a historic figure such as Daniel Boone or Private William Greathouse.
Fort Boonesborough State Park is lovely year-round and is just as interesting and relaxing in the winter.
Consider a trip to an upcoming event or possibly even a winter camping getaway at their campground, which is open all year long!
