Kentucky is a waterfall wonderland, boasting some of the tallest, rarest, most wondrous falls on the planet. And it’s not all quality over quantity, either; within the Kentucky Wildlands region alone, there are over 800 jaw-dropping waterfalls! In tiny little Somerset, Kentucky, Pine Island Double Falls is a natural wonder that will take your breath away. The best part? The hike to this double waterfall in Kentucky is just 1.4 miles long.
This is the beguiling, startlingly emerald oasis that awaits along the Pine Island Double Falls Trail.
The eponymous falls is comprised of a duo of cascades that become one big, resplendent rush of water that pours into a beautiful blue basin below.
The hike to this waterfall is short-and-sweet, too; an accessible, dog-friendly trek with minimal elevation gain and loads of lovely scenery.
The 1.4 mile trail ventures through some of the lushest, loveliest part of the Daniel Boone Natural Forest, a natural wonderland in Kentucky.
The trail is well-marked and quite popular, venturing past many of the features for which Kentucky is most known: gorges, canyons, caves, and, of course, waterfalls.
The trail winds through wondrous woodlands and past towering, carved-out rocks that line a scenic creek. You'll actually follow this creek for most of the hike; as a result of this rocky and wet terrain, this hike is rated "moderate," though most adventurers report breezing through this trail.
The best -- and slipperiest -- time to visit Pine Island Double Falls is early spring, as thawing snow and seasonal rains put this waterfall at its fullest.
In fact, when the falls are full enough, you might even feel the spray of cool water! What a refreshing and life-affirming waterfall hike in Kentucky.
Have you hiked to Pine Island Double Falls before? It's no secret that this double waterfall is one of the most incredibly beautiful in Kentucky!
