While many of Kentucky's most scenic places are hidden deep in the woods, there are also some spots that are easily accessible. Our state offers roadside overlooks where you barely have to get out of your car, but there are also short trails that lead to the most awe-inspiring views. Located in Red River Gorge, the Chimney Top Trail (also known as Chimney Rock), is an easy trail in Kentucky that takes you out to an overlook and then back to reality. You'll feel as if you've entered another world, or at least like you're on top of it, while exploring this easy trail in Kentucky.
If you drive around the Red River Gorge area, you'll come across many of these signs, pointing you to scenic hiking trails.
This particular sign leads to Chimney Rock, or Chimney Top Rock as it's also called, and the scenic drive to reach it is just the beginning.
When you turn onto the gravel road, roll your windows down and take in the cool forest air.
A tunnel of trees will guide you along a 5-mile stretch of road that is actually much longer than the trail itself. But the isolated feel and relaxing atmosphere only add to the experience.
You'll reach a parking lot and from there can easily locate the trailhead.
Trail #235 is only just over half a mile long total, out and back. It is mostly paved and with little to no elevation changes. While easy to traverse, keep in mind it is still on top of a ridge, so exercise caution, especially along the edges of the trail.
While you walk along the wide path, take your time and look for glimpses of the views beyond.
These photos were taken in May when the canopy was fairly thick, but you can imagine it is beautiful any season of the year.
This perspective shows the rocky steps that lead down to the overlook, once you reach the furthest point on the trail.
Watch your step as you head down to the overlook, which is surrounded with wooden fencing.
And then prepare to have your breath taken away.
The views from up here are astounding and do make you feel like you're in another world, far away from it all.
The overlook allows for panoramic views of the Gorge, the Red River, and rock formations beyond.
Take your time here, witnessing the wonderful beauty of our state.
As beautiful as the trees and rocky hills are, the sky is always amazing from this view, as well.
If you're in the area for awhile, this easy trail is worth a visit multiple times at different times of the day, just to see the sky painted in various colors. This magical trail is such a gift to everyone who wants to experience spectacular views, without the effort of a long, strenuous hike.
