Kentucky is full of so many natural wonders, both above and below ground. From our world-famous caves to our wondrous mountains and canyons, Kentucky is one big wonder of a place. But did you know there's an experience that combines both above *and* below-ground adventures, where you can literally walk straight through a mountain while exploring a cave? Within the majestic Kentucky Appalachians, there's an underground adventure that's truly bucket-list worthy. This Kentucky cavern tour is easily the most unique you'll ever take!
In Eastern Kentucky, the state’s rolling blue hills gently fold into the Appalachian Mountains. Known as the Kentucky Appalachians, this is one of the most naturally beautiful areas of the Bluegrass.
Carter Caves State Resort Park is located right in this lovely mountainous region.
While known for its abundance of outdoor recreation -- camping, kayaking, hiking, rock climbing, and fishing -- the titular caves really are the stars of the show here.
In fact, the Carter County region has the highest concentration of caves in any area of Kentucky! People come from far and wide to enjoy a subterranean adventure unlike any other.
The state park offers several different cave tours, from self-guided walks to organized expeditions led by a park ranger.
There are even "next level" tours (that's actually what they're called!) that literally venture through the park's deepest underground tunnels.
Definitely opt for a guided tour; they range in length from 0.25-0.75 miles, with anywhere from 75 to 225 steps.
Along the way, you'll journey deep into the heart of these underground wilds, located beneath the Kentucky Appalachians.
It's incredible to think that this subterranean world was created by mother nature over literally millions of years.
An underground cavern tour through the Kentucky Appalachians?
This is one Bluegrass State adventure for your bucket list, for sure.
