It may not officially be fall yet, but it seems most people are ready for the hot temperatures and humid air to head on out of Kentucky so the cool autumn breezes can move in. Throughout the month of September, the air changes, as well as the leaves on the trees, and our state becomes an artistic masterpiece in nature. If you love the vibrancy of fall, then you'll be happy to hear that Kentucky's fall foliage should be bright and bold this year! Here's an idea of when to expect the transformation.
Fall is a gorgeous time of year in Kentucky as the leaves change into a sea of red, orange, and yellow and the air shifts from hot and humid to cool and crisp. It's almost time to hear that crunching under your shoes as you head out the door, but first, let's take a look at when those bright colors will be taking over our landscape.
Each year, Smoky Mountains develops an interactive map that shows when to expect the peak of fall color in your area. You can access the map for yourself here.
Below, you'll see a view of the map on October 29th. It shows part of Kentucky in peak color, while the western half is nearing it.
By November 5th, it's predicted that the eastern half of our state will be past its peak fall color and the western half will be at its prime. These are always just predictions, but they do tend to be fairly close from year to year!
There are so many places in Kentucky to view the gorgeous fall colors. Horse Country makes for a picturesque scenic drive as horses graze on green fields, which are spotted with brightly colors trees.
These leaves change into their natural, bold colors as the production of chlorophyll slows with the shorter fall days. You can read all about the science behind the changing of the leaves through the map link above.
Another must-see destination at some point during the fall season is Red River Gorge. The scenic overlooks and rustic landscape are even more brilliant during this colorful season.
Our state's largest waterfall, Cumberland Falls, is also extra special during this season. Hike the trail to Eagle Falls to be able to witness views of both Eagle and Cumberland Falls, and be sure to time it for the end of October.
It was a great summer in Kentucky, but we are ready for a bright and beautiful fall. Keep an eye on your calendar and the weather over the next few weeks, but it's shaping up to be a vibrant autumn season in the Bluegrass State.
