There are certain places in Kentucky that will completely take your breath away. Many of these are known natural wonders, such as Red River Gorge and Mammoth Cave. Some, however, are quieter places that will completely take you by surprise. This is most certainly the case with Balanced Rock Trail. Located in Kentucky's wondrous Natural Bridge State Park, the hallmark of this hike is the eponymous balanced rock, and there are numerous other formations and geological wonders along the way. But what you'll see at the end of the trail will render you utterly speechless. There's a hidden overlook along Balanced Rock Trail, and the views from this spot are incomparable.
Natural Bridge State is best-known for its jaw-dropping geological formations and features, and the park's Balanced Rock Trail certainly delivers in this area.
The trail's titular "balanced rock" is a stack of sandstone rocks that are perfectly, albeit precariously, balanced atop one another.
But these rocks aren't the only extraordinary sight you'll see while hiking the Balanced Rock Trail.
While this out-and-back trail totals just 1.5 miles, it's chock-full of scenic beauty... and steps!
Balanced Rock Trail is the steepest trek in the park, with more than 600 stairs. The trailhead is located behind Hemlock Lodge.
At the trailhead, hikers are immediately faced with a steep series of steps leading to a small cave.
Past the cave, the ascent continues, guiding hikers to the eponymous Balanced Rock.
But your journey doesn't end there. From here, the trail gets steeper... but don't turn back yet!
Because what awaits you at the top is so worth it.
Known as "Lover’s Leap," this overlook offers an awesome view of the canyon below.
Beautiful all-year round, the views are especially breathtaking in the fall.
So stop, rest, and take it all in. The trail isn't going anywhere! And luckily, it's all downhill from here.
