Over the years, zoos have gone from terrible concrete prisons that kept animals in incredibly poor conditions to world-class facilities that house animals in naturalistic environments. We're lucky enough to have one of the latter zoos in Kansas: the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita is one of the very best zoos in the country. This magical place is one of the most beloved family-friendly attractions in the state. You'll be able to see a variety of animals from all over the world and learn all about their lives in the wild.
The Sedgwick County Zoo is one of a handful of zoos in Kansas that are AZA-accredited.
Accreditation from the American Zoological Association indicates that a facility meets standards of humane upkeep for the animals that live there. It also means that the zoo is one that is working towards the conservation of wild animal populations.
You'll find more than 3,000 animals here, including many species that are not native to the United States.
Some are exotic - lions, tigers, and bears, oh my!
Others come from a little closer to home.
The Children's Farms feature many farm species like sheep, goats, and chickens that the little ones will love petting and feeding.
Many of the creatures are cute and furry, but there is lots to love here from all over the animal kingdom.
Reptiles and feathered friends are well-represented, too!
There are a variety of add-on experiences available where you'll have unique opportunities for animal interaction, like feeding a giraffe or petting a stingray.
This is one of the best zoos in Kansas and it's the perfect spot for a family day trip.
