Have you heard the sirens in your neighborhood yet this year? The number of tornadoes in Kansas might have been near an all time low last year, but it's clear that this year, the storms we're getting certainly mean business. This year, we're expected to get hit with more than we've had in a while, so be prepared. Here's what we've heard is going down:
There are a lot of predictions going around about what we'll see during tornado season this year, but so far, the general consensus is that it's going to be a wild one, with more tornadoes than years past.
We as a country may have set a record low in number of "violent" tornadoes (winds of 166 mph or higher) last year, but that is changing for 2019.
Accuweather has predicted that we're going to have a rough number of tornadoes, and other weather forecasters have agreed. There's a weather pattern going on at the moment that's sending front after front towards our neck of the woods, without letting up for too long. It may be tied to warmer-than-normal sea surface temperatures, but so far, all we know is whatever the cause, this is the end result.
For a while, weather experts were sure that tornado alley was shifting east slowly, but this year must be feeling a little more retro than years past, because it's going to be storms right up our alley, literally and figuratively.
It's already started, with the few tornadoes we've had confirming that this late start to the season doesn't mean it won't make up for lost time. It's been long enough, and many of us feel like we're due for a doozy.
We're not sure exactly what this spring will bring until we count them all up at the end of the year, but it looks like April showers are bringing more than May flowers, that's for sure.
