Have you ever found a place in Kansas that was just too beautiful for words? Not only is this place easy on the eyes, but it's full of wildlife you may have never seen before. Come check out this natural wonder sitting under our noses! It's definitely one for your bucket list.
This amazing place that looks like it came out of a National Geographic magazine instead of our own backyard. What you see here is Quivira National Wildlife Refuge.
It was established in 1955 as a location for migrating waterfowl to live as they came through Kansas.
Over 22,000 acres of salt marsh and sand prairie are protected as a home for any and all wildlife that make their way here.
It's a unique area of land that lies right in the middle of the Central Flyway, so it's never an empty area.
7,000 or so of those acres are wetlands, where those hundreds of thousands of migratory birds land and use this as a temporary home every year.
Over 340 species of birds have been recorded and photographed here, so it's a real treat if you're looking to see all sorts of colors you've never seen before.
Not only are there tons of birds here to see, but you'll also find other wildlife roaming around.
Everything from butterflies to coyotes has made this refuge their home, and we couldn't be happier to keep it for them.
During migration season, scenes like this happen all the time.
While you're here, enjoy fishing, birdwatching through telescopes, the visitors center, over 40 miles of roads and trails, and even observation platforms.
Speaking of observation platforms, the beauty of Quivira doesn't just end at sunset.
At night, you can see all sorts of constellations that are normally blocked out by the light of your local town or city. Coupled with the sounds of nature surrounding you, it's a breathtaking experience.
Isn't this wildlife refuge simply gorgeous? It truly is a natural wonder that every Kansan should witness at least once.
The visitor's center is open on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and sometimes on weekends during spring and fall.
You'll find Quivira National Wildlife Refuge at 1434 NE 80th St, Stafford, KS. It's seated between Hutch and Great Bend, if that helps at all. Happy trails!
