Kansas has a lot of sky to see. Because we don't have any mountains and our hills aren't very high, we get to see a lot of our beautiful sky and the different colors found within it. Of course, one of the best things to witness in Kansas is a meteor shower. This year, we've got a big one coming.
Did you know that meteor showers are much more common than they seem? The Perseid Meteor Shower happens every year in late summer for us to see.
Of course, this year, we have a great view of everything that's going on.
The meteor shower is supposed to be most visible on the nights of August 11-13, but it lasts about a whole month, from mid July to late August.
It's the perfect time to spend a night or two outside, where you can camp out at a lake away from town, or take a truck bed and a mattress and make it a comfortable night out with friends.
For those of us near cities or big towns, it's advised to head out to somewhere more remote to enjoy the stars.
The closer you are to the town or city, the less you'll see. Find a country road and take it somewhere! I personally recommend any state park that's away from towns.
After all, it's a wonderful Kansas pastime to lay back and watch the stars as you talk about anything and everything.
You can bring a camera, but if you don't have long-exposure abilities, you might not catch any shooting stars on film.
