One of the things we Kansans always have is a healthy sense of adventure. We love to climb, hunt, swim, and fly whenever we can. Well, most of us, anyways. For those of us with the spirit of adventure, there are plenty of places in Kansas to fill that. This amazing rock formation is opening up to the public this summer, and we couldn't be more excited.
Kansans thought they knew what the biggest chalk formation in Kansas was, but we've been wrong for years. Nicknamed "Little Jerusalem", this formation in Logan County dwarfs what we call Monument Rocks.
This amazing area has been private property for a while, but was bought and is being prepared as a new public touring area.
Chalk is fragile, and we've got to make sure that we don't destroy this gorgeous area with trash, vehicles, or vandalism, and preserve it as best as possible. Who knows, maybe we'll find some great fossils!
Just a little ways north of Lake Scott State Park, "Little Jerusalem" is connected to Smoky Valley Ranch, another public property protected as a Nature Conservancy.
Hopefully we get an opening date soon, because my feet are itching to tour this wonderful piece of ancient Kansas history.
Here's the video! I recommend watching the whole thing, it's positively enchanting!
If you're looking for Monument Rocks while you wait for this piece to open, you can check them out here.
