Fall's finally setting in with colder weather and showers, but you're probably still wanting to check out just how gorgeous Kansas looks with all these colors. It's one of our most beautiful season, and these hiking trails under 5 miles are the perfect way to see so much of Kansas's beauty. In no particular order, here are nine of our favorite fall hikes to explore in Kansas during this season.
1. Mt. Sunflower Trail - Weskan, Kansas
From the parking area, take the half-mile trek "up" to Mt. Sunflower, Kansas' highest point. It may not be full of lush greenery, but there's something so beautiful about dry brown grass against a forever blue sky.
2. Stoptler Cove Nature Trail - Wyandotte County Park
This 1.2-mile loop is the perfect setting for photos around fall, if you catch the leaves turning at the right time. The end of the trail brings you to a gorgeous area where you can see fall leaves everywhere, and the Wyandotte County LAke in the background. Can you imagine a sunrise here?
3. Alcove Springs - Alcove Springs Park
This half-mile trail includes a beautiful little waterfall, and is very well kept. The end of the hike is the best part, when you get to surround yourself with natural beauty and fall foliage before heading back towards civilization.
4. Cottonwood Trail - Tuttle Creek State Park
Tuttle Creek has a couple amazing trails to choose from, but this 0.6-mile trail is popular with many, and offers a stunning view of the lake framed by fall trees.
5. East Loop Trail - Bassett, Kansas
This quick 1-mile hike is great for any skill level, and is a wide gravel trial that leads through the trees and near the quarry bluffs, where you can catch a glimpse of the lake through the foliage.
6. Cottonwood Trail - Overland Park, Kansas
This 0.7-mile trail is pretty popular with locals, and features beautiful wildflowers in the spring, contrasting with the vivid colors in the fall. It's part of the Arboretum here, so don't be afraid to make it a full day and walk all the trails!
7. Upper Ridge Trail - Ernie Miller Nature Center
Both trails at this park are gorgeous in the fall, but this 1.8-mile bit is perfect for taking a couple hours away from the world and enjoying nature. There's wildflowers in the spring, but the foliage in the fall is all we're here for. At the nature center building, there's also animals you can view as well.
8. "Three Mile Creek Trail" - Leavenworth Landing Park
This 1.1-mile trail is part of the Downtown Leavenworth area, featuring a river and plenty of space to gaze at the trees. It ends in the beautiful downtown area, with lots of shops and architecture to view.
