It's no secret that some of the Sunflower State's larger cities have plenty of great museums. The Evel Knievel Museum in Topeka is so much fun, and no family visit to Wichita would be complete without stopping by Exploration Place - but there are also some great small-town museums in Kansas that shouldn't be overlooked. One of our favorites is tucked away in the little city of Wamego. Located in the northeast corner of the state in Pottawatomie County, Wamego is home to just under 5,000 people, and it's also where you'll find the delightful Wamego Historical Museum, which offers a charming look into the city's past that feels like a step back in time.
On my travels through the country, I've been surprised time and time again by small-town museums. It's easy to go in with low expectations, but they often provide fascinating glimpses into the history of the local area.
That's certainly what you'll find at the Wamego Historical Museum, which has so much information about the local area, even dating back to pioneer days.
There's even a taxidermized, full-body bison named Abigail. She was hand-raised in nearby Paxico, KS, and her body was stuffed when she passed away.
Another unique find at the museum is a mint condition, 1950 Chrysler Coupe with only 31,000 miles on the odometer.
The car has local ties: Walter P. Chrysler, founder of the Chrysler Company, was born here in Wamego.
One of the most interesting sights at the museum is The Village, a series of historic buildings reflecting life from centuries past.
You can see a one-room schoolhouse, the town's 1872 jail, and more here.
The museum is located within a tranquil city park, so you can enjoy a stroll through the park's 20 acres after checking out the museum's relics.
