In our state, there are lots of plains and hills and fields of gold, but not many forested areas. Even though we don't have any giant forests where you can't see the sky through the trees, our bits and pieces are just as peaceful. This hike in Kansas is perfect for a short trip into nature while still getting that away-from-home feeling we crave when exploring.
Today's destination is Chisholm Creek trail: a wildlife haven hiding out in the city.
Chisholm Creek trail is one of two trails in this park of the same name, and totals 1.7 miles in length as a loop.
One of the most magical places within this trail is a tunnel of beautiful osage orange trees.
In addition to that beautiful tree tunnel, there are also open plains areas, a river, and more than enough places to spot many types of Kansas wildlife.
Not all of the trail is dirt, either. Some of it is well-kept concrete, and other sections are boardwalks overlooking the water and making for a perfect place to spot turtles and birds.
The trail is pretty popular, though there are days when you feel like you have the whole place to yourself. It's perfect for families, and if you've got spare time, it's easy to travel the other trails connecting to this one.
The trail is open from sunup to sundown, and the Nature Center attached is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Maybe we'll run into you sometime!
Address: 2200, 6232 East 29th Street N, Wichita, KS 67220
